EU : ATEX Directive

Subject Equipment and protective systems intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres (ATmosphères EXplosibles)

Notes

Equipment under the ATEX directive is required to have the CE mark and also the ATEX symbol affixed alongside with the relevant equipment group and category markings.
If applicable, the CE mark must be followed by the identification number of the notified body involved in the production control stage

EU: Battery Directive

Subject

Collection, treatment, recycling and disposal of waste batteries and accumulators. Prohibition of certain battery types containing Cadmium or Mercury

Reference

EU Battery Directive 2006/66/EC

Brüel & Kjær Relevance

Covers all types of batteries, both primary and secondary batteries (rechargeable), used in Brüel & Kjær products

Notes

Marking requirements

  • "Crossed-out Wheeled Bin" (as WEEE Directive)
  • Battery's content of hazardous substances (e.g., Hg, Cd, Pb) or
  • Indication of battery chemistry (e.g., Ni-MH, Li-ion)
  • Rated capacity of the battery

EU : EMC Directive

Subject The EMC Directive is specifying Electro Magnetic Compatibility in terms of emission and immunity under different circumstances
Reference

EMC directive 2004/108/EC replacing the former EMC directive 89/336/EEC with amendments 91/263/EEC, 92/31/EEC and 93/68/EEC per 20 July 2007

Brüel & Kjær Relevance The requirements of the EMC directive are applicable to all products that are liable to cause electromagnetic disturbance, or whose performance is liable to be affected by such disturbance

EU : EUP

Subject Framework for ecodesign of Energy-Using Products in order to contribute to a sustainable development by increasing the energy efficiency of products.

Brüel & Kjær Relevance Brüel & Kjær products are covered by this directive, but no requirements are applicable
Notes Only mass-produced products are subject to the requirements

EU : Low Voltage Directive

Subject Specification of safety requirements for equipment within certain voltage limits
Reference EU Low Voltage Directive 2006/95/EC (a codified version of the previous directive)

The former Low Voltage directive 72/23/EEC and amendment 93/68/EEC was repealed on 16. January, 2007

Brüel & Kjær Relevance The requirements are applicable to all mains-supplied Brüel & Kjær products, or products operating with high voltages (e.g., condenser microphone polarisation voltages)



EU : Machinery Directive

Subject Health and safety requirements to Machinery and Safety Components
Reference

EU Directive 98/37/EC
Specifies the essential health and safety requirements for machinery products

Brüel & Kjær Relevance Only a very limited number of Brüel & Kjær products are within the scope of this directive
Notes

Machinery is defined as: products which contain one or more moving parts. Excluded are products whose only power source is directly applied manual force



EU : MID Directive

Subject To facilitate the trade of certain Measuring Instruments across the EU and to provide common rules to ensure that certain measuring instruments provides a high level of metrological protection
Reference Measuring Instruments Directive 2004/22/EC

The MID Directive covers a number of legally controlled measuring devices, including water -, gas -, heat -, electricity-meters, weighing instruments, taximeters, etc.

Brüel & Kjær Relevance Brüel & Kjær products are not covered by the scope of this directive

EU : Packaging Directive

Subject Managing of packaging and packaging waste in order to reduce the impact on the environment and to improve reuse, recycling and recovering of packaging waste.
Reference EU Packaging Directive 94/62/EC & 2005/20/EC
Brüel & Kjær Relevance Applicable to all packaging of Brüel & Kjær products regardless of the materials used
Notes Appropiate marking (clearly visible, easily legible, durable, lasting) is required to enable identification of the packaging material

EU : REACH Regulation

Subject Registration, Evaluation and Authorization of CHemicals
Reference EU REACH Regulation 1907/2006 and Directive
Brüel & Kjær Relevance Brüel & Kjær does not manufacture, market, import or use any chemical above the quantity threshold of 1000 kg per year, and is therefore not subject to registration under REACH

Further Brüel & Kjær does not manufacture, market, import or use any "Substance of Very High Concern" (SVHC).

Notes Relevant marking is required dependent on the type of dangerous substance involved

EU : RoHS Directive

Subject Restrictions of the use of certain Hazardous Substances in electrical and electronic equipment
Reference EU RoHS Directive 2002/95/EC
Brüel & Kjær Relevance Brüel & Kjær equipment is Category 9 (ref. Annex B to the WEEE Directive) and as such exempted from the requirements

Notes Restricted substances are heavy metals Hg (Mercury), Cd (Cadmium), Pb (Lead), Cr6 (Chromium VI), and poly-bromiated flame retardants PBB and PBDE.

The same restrictions to PBB and PBDE are stated in Directive 2003/11/EC.

EU : Waste handling (WEEE)

Subject Prevention and reuse/recycling of Waste Electrical and Electronical Equipment (EEE) to reduce disposal
Reference EU WEEE Directive 2002/96/EC
Brüel & Kjær Relevance The requirements apply to all Brüel & Kjær EEE.

Notes Annex B defines 10 categories and Brüel & Kjær equipment falls into Cat. 9

Items in Brüel & Kjær equipment requiring special treatment are: PCB's (>10 cm²), batteries or LCD displays (>100 cm²)

Norway : PoHS ("Norwegian RoHS")

Subject Prohibition of Hazardous Substances in consumer products (PoHS)
Reference Only a preliminary draft of the regulation is available for the time being (Dec 2007)

Brüel & Kjær Relevance Brüel & Kjær products are not within the scope of the planned regulation.
Notes A large number of “consumer products” are concerned, excluded are, however, food, medical products, tobacco, vehicles and vehicle accessories (e.g., tyres).
Also excluded are products only used for commercial and industrial purposes.
