Troubleshooting sound insulation

Buildings are constructed using many elements, and the sound insulation may be compromised by defects in materials or workmanship. Quite often, the traditional measurement will show that the sound insulation is not as good as expected or required by law. If this is the case, a measurement using sound intensity can diagnose the fault by showing the contribution of each surface element to the sound reduction index.

If you suspect a certain weak area, the contribution for that area can be measured and checked separately. Or you can divide the partition into smaller sections and check each section until you find the fault. This measurement method also eliminates flanking transmission (or, by subtraction, lets you estimate its influence), and is ideal for detecting and measuring the influence of leaks.

2260 Investigator for sound intensity

Here's all you need to convert 2260 Investigator into a sound intensity analyzer:

  • Sound Intensity Probe Kit Type 3595
  • Sound Intensity Software BZ 7205
  • Noise Explorer PC Software Type 7815

The intensity probe connects to 2260 Investigator's 2-channel microphone inputs. BZ 7205 software transforms 2260 Investigator into an easy-to-use sound intensity analyzer that produces final results (reduction indices) on the spot. Noise Explorer is ideal for presenting and archiving results. Armed with this equipment, 2260 Investigator will also measure sound power according to ISO 96142.

Sound intensity in practice

To measure the sound reduction index for a surface element you have to:

  • Scan the probe over the measurement object in the receiving room
  • Read the result on 2260 Investigator's screen
