Unusual Benefits
Type 2250, the new hand-held analyzer, has many innovative features and benefits.
Below you will find some of the more unusual benefits – those that you would not necessarily expect to find even in a modern hand-held analyzer or sound level meter. All the quotations are genuine comments from professionals who tried out Type 2250 at an Envirotour event earlier this year.
1. Getting Everything Safely to Inconvenient Locations
To do the job you need much more than an instrument with the necessary functions. Not only do you always need a number of accessories, but you also need to have them conveniently at hand at the site, even if this site is the top of a chimney or deep down in a cellar. That’s why Type 2250 comes complete with its own Travel Bag. You can hold it in your hand, use it as a shoulder bag, or as a rucksack. It has room not only for the instrument, calibrator and other accessories, but also for your other personal stuff, such as mobile phone, laptop, or snack for a day out in the field!
“The rucksack is much more convenient for the type of work I do than the traditional briefcase or shoulder bag”
2. Two Microphones are Better than One!
For each measurement you normally need to make notes of the setting, the conditions and more, and it’s not necessarily easy to do that in all settings. That’s exactly the reason why Type 2250 comes with two microphones. In addition to the measurement microphone, a separate microphone is built into the instrument. This microphone can record sound on a separate, dedicated channel – you just press the commentary key and record what’s happening. You can do this before, during or after a measurement, and your comments are attached to the measurement. Even after you have transferred data to a PC, you will not have to work out which comments go with which measurement. And comments made during a measurement will not be part of the measurement, hence the separate microphone for comments. If you place your measurement microphone at a distance, you can comment on on-going measurements without interfering.
“Boy, it’s great!”
3. Get a Grip
With one hand gripping a ladder, and the other holding your instrument, you might just feel at risk of dropping the meter. Of course a wrist strap is included, but for additional safety Type 2250 is cast using two types of plastics, one a soft, high-friction plastic for both comfort and a firm and safe grip. What’s more, this also means that Type 2250 lies steadily on your desk when put down and doesn’t rattle around.
“It makes me feel more secure”
4. More than One Calibration History?
Calibration information is included with all measurements, and a calibration history is available in Type 2250. But then, at some point, your main results are included in a report, separate from the actual archive of measurements. Can you document the calibration used, even if you used a non-standard transducer because the measurement was a special one? With Type 2250 you can, because it maintains a calibration history for each individual transducer. So if you do have special purpose microphones, or make vibration measurements with a number of different accelerometers, you can, at a later date, find calibration data for that particular transducer. And of course, when you choose a transducer from the built-in database, the latest calibration data for that transducer is used as a starting point. To make it even easier, the setup of, for example, polarization voltage is done automatically.
“You really seem to have got everything right”
5. Automatic Correction
The most commonly used accessory during sound level measurements is the windscreen. It is good practice to use one when making outdoor measurements, and in many cases the use of a windscreen is required by legislation or standard procedures. This provides a problem – a windscreen that reduces wind-induced noise is also bound to affect the frequency response of the instrumentation. Therefore, modern instruments include filters to correct for the windscreen’s effects. In principle, a good solution, but unfortunately one problem remains – you might forget to switch on the filter, or you might forget to switch it off when you remove the windscreen. In both cases, the required tolerances may be exceeded. That’s why Type 2250 includes the unique auto-detection of the supplied windscreen. When the windscreen is mounted (or removed) this is automatically detected and the corresponding correction filter applied. And the fact that a specific windscreen was used is saved permanently with the measurement setup and data.
“Oh, I have often forgotten to correct for the windscreen”
6. See in the Dark
For good reasons, measurements are often made at night. Firstly, you need to get rid of other sound sources in order to investigate a specific source, and there is less traffic at night and many industrial sources are inactive. Secondly, you might, for example, be investigating complaints about a compressor that is a nuisance only during the night. Whatever the reason, you will be working in the dark for a considerable time and your eyes will adapt accordingly. But looking at Type 2250’s very bright colour display is, unfortunately, a perfect way to ruin your night vision. The solution is Type 2250’s night-time colour scheme employing low-intensity red and blue colours that allow you to easily read the display without disturbing your vision.
“The night screen is very useful, I do half of my measurements in the dark”
