Vibration Testing

Vibration testing is used in industries ranging from aerospace and defence, to the development of the latest smartphones. Through vibration testing and analysis, we can gain insight into the inner world of products, machines, and structures.

Material stress testing

As vibrations move and shake objects, they stress their materials and construction. So, vibration testing can reveal how if a product is to like to fail in real-life conditions, and how much stress it can withstand. Vibrations can indicate weak points in a product, demonstrate how much force it takes to break it or simulate the product’s lifetime in just a matter of hours.

Listening to the dynamic response

The inner world of structures, such as automotive components, is a vital place to investigate vibrations. Insights to how parts respond to forces in the real world are gained through vibration excitation. The excitation creates a dynamic response, we can ‘listen’ to and use to discover the inherent structural dynamics and health. These are the properties that, for example, will produce noise and vibration in a vehicle, or more seriously could create weak points in an aircraft.

Vibration analysis

Even without ‘exciting’ a product, we can learn about it by ‘listening’ to vibrations. Vibration analysis can show us how well balanced an automotive brake disc is: whether it’s good enough to be put on a car and trusted to stop it in an emergency. Measuring the vibrations generated during the operation of a product – from a wind turbine blade to a vehicle gearbox – can reveal issues within it and locate their origins.

Whether you want to generate external vibrations to test product integrity or to analyze and engineer the vibrations your products themselves make, Brüel & Kjær can provide a system, training, and service – from vibration exciters to data acquisition and analysis.
