Partnerships and Collaboration

Partnerships around the world help us provide our customers with better products and services. Brüel & Kjær partners fall into two main groups: Computer-aided engineering plus software and consultancy.

Computer-Aided Engineering (CAE)

Our partnerships with several leading CAE suppliers helps improve processes,  optimize communication between the virtual and physical domains, and reduce time-to-market.

These partnerships focus on three key areas:

  • In-context NVH evaluation
For automotive applications where only one component or sub-assembly in the vehicle can be modelled accurately, Brüel & Kjær's NVH simulation tools enables you to drive, hear and feel designs before a prototype exists.
  • Structural model correlation
Correlate test and simulation models for dynamic structural analysis and predict the effects of design changes.
  • Virtual source definition
Test data is the best source of real-world load definition but it is often not immediately usable in a simulation environment. We are working with our CAE partners to understand how to format and package data that will simplify and automate its use in CAE models

Software and consultancy

These partners help us create a better understanding of the technical challenges facing our customers who are measuring and managing the quality of sound and vibration in their products and the environment.

Altair

Altair is focused on the development and broad application of simulation technology to synthesize and optimize designs, processes and decisions for improved business performance.  With more than 2,300 employees, Altair is headquartered in Troy, Michigan, USA and operates more than 40 offices throughout 22 countries.

The NVH Partnership

Altair and Brüel & Kjær are collectively working to accelerate product NVH optimization methods. Test and simulation are complementary activities, particularly when simulation is used as more than just virtual validation. When using Altair HyperWorks to undertake early design studies, empirical data is important to populate the models and provide confidence in the results, often with tests not traditionally required in a product validation process.

The Brüel & Kjær NVH Simulator brings a subjective, tactile experience of NVH simulation results, impossible in even the most advanced visualizations. The opportunity to allow customers to hear and feel the effect of an Altair NVH Director full vehicle, simulation driven, design improvement to an NVH objective has enormous potential. Allowing senior management to experience a design change and make value judgments, not just before parts are built and tested, but before CAD is even created, brings huge time and cost savings.

Dassault Systèmes

Dassault Systèmes develops and markets PLM software solutions and services, providing a 3D-vision of the entire lifecycle of products – from conception to maintenance. Dassault Systèmes Simulia Corp. (SIMULIA) is a CAE vendor, making realistic simulation an integral business practice that improves product performance and reduces the number of physical prototypes required.

The acoustic partnership

The SIMULIA/Brüel & Kjær collaboration will augment SIMULIA’s NVH/acoustics’ capabilities with Brüel & Kjær’s industry-leading specialized data analysis, visualization, and reporting tools for NVH. Specific areas include:

  • Post-process of NVH data: Pulse Reflex Core – 2D graphing, analysis and reporting
  • Evaluate NVH source path contributions: Source Path Contribution  (SPC) – Identify critical noise path/sensitivities
  • Correlate CAE structural results with tests: Reflex Modal Correlation – Visual and numerical modal correlation analysis
  • Experiencing CAE data in the NVH Simulator – combining virtual and physical test data to optimize the sound of a vehicle and "drive the design".

3DS (EXA)

Exa is a world leader in technology for computational-fluid design (CFD). This creates simulations that accurately predict real-world flow conditions. Exa’s products can be used to model wind noise inside vehicles as they move.

Brüel & Kjær can read the Exa model results in the NVH simulator and this allows customers to hear wind tunnel noise and simulation changes in context, with all the other sources of car noise, including the engine, road noise, intake and exhaust. This helps to improve simulation data and create numerical data – checking the precision of models.

MSC Software

MSC Software makes software products that enable engineers to validate and optimize their designs using virtual prototypes. Their products accurately and reliably predict how products will behave in the real world. Leading manufacturers use MSC Software’s simulation technology for linear and nonlinear finite element analysis (FEA), acoustics, multi-body dynamics, optimization, fatigue and durability, material behaviour, and control systems.

MSC Nastran is one of the world’s most widely used finite element analysis solutions, with a history that stretches from the Apollo space missions to today’s aircraft, automobiles, heavy equipment and consumer products. The same industries employ MSC’s Adams Multibody Dynamics software to predict design performance by simulating the dynamics of moving parts and how loads and forces are distributed throughout mechanical systems.

Actran is the premier acoustics software to solve acoustics, vibro-acoustics, and aero-acoustics problems.

Acoustics Engineering

Acoustics Engineering (AE) was established in 1987, concentrating on consultancy in the area of room acoustics, plus the development of software and equipment to increase the efficiency and quality of these activities. This was particularly successful due to the integration of acoustics, software, electronics and mechanics.

Ten years later, the focus shifted to the development of acoustics software and equipment. One of the partners is also active at the Acoustics Laboratory of the Technical University of Eindhoven.
