OPERATIONAL MODAL ANALYSIS (OMA)

DESCRIPTION

In Operational Modal Analysis (OMA) only the output of the structure is measured, using the ambient and operating forces as unmeasured input. This two-day course describes how OMA can be used instead of classical modal analysis for accurate modal identification under actual operating conditions, and in situations where it is difficult or impossible to artificially excite the structure. The theory behind the different time and frequency domain techniques will be covered and the use of OMA will be illustrated with several examples from civil and mechanical engineering.

OBJECTIVES

  • To give an understanding of Operational Modal Analysis, its possibilities and limitations, and how it can be used as a complement to classical modal analysis.
  • To teach how to perform proper data acquisition and validation of the vibration signals used for the subsequent modal analysis.
  • To explain and demonstrate the different techniques used in operational modal analysis.
  • To introduce structural health monitoring based on state-space models from operational modal analysis.

PREREQUISITES

Basic knowledge of and experience in vibration analysis, mathematics and physics. Basic knowledge of signal analysis and processing recommended.
