Transducers are a core part of Brüel & Kjær’s business – they always have been, for more than 60 years

WHAT IS A TRANSDUCER?

A transducer is a device that converts energy from one form to another in such a manner that the desired characteristics of the input energy appear at the output signal.

Transducers are used extensively in R&D and cover a wide range of testing applications – for instance, to develop quieter, safer cars, to ensure that an aircraft and its engines are totally reliable and environmentally friendly and that household appliances have low levels of noise and vibration.

The list of applications where transducers are applied is almost endless, as reflected in the extensive catalog of Brüel & Kjær transducers, which range from industry-leading measurement microphones, hydrophones, and sound sources, to force and impact transducers, and piezoelectric accelerometers featuring patented technology.

Transducers are a vital first link in your measurement chain. They stand on the front line and provide you with the raw data you need, making it critically important that they provide reliable and trustworthy measurements.

TRANSDUCERS VS SENSORS

The terms transducer and sensor are commonly used interchangeably - but in fact, they are very different devices and possess different characteristics. Both sensors and transducers are devices that react to changes in the physical quality of their surroundings.

The main difference is that a sensor is a device which "senses" change in an environment, and provides an output in the same format. A transducer, however, takes a measurement in one form and converts it to another. An example of this would be converting a non-electrical input into an electrical signal. This is called “transduction”, which naturally relates closely to the name of the device.

TRANSDUCER DEVELOPMENT AND TESTING

Every Brüel & Kjær transducer is thoroughly tested during its production to ensure that its performance is within the specified parameters. Extremely high standards are met in our products and their quality, reflected in our status as an ISO 9001 and EN 9100 certified company.

Before the production of a transducer starts, all parts, whether from sub-suppliers or manufactured within Brüel & Kjær, are subjected to rigorous inspection. This takes the form of physical and dimensional inspection and conformity to specifications.

Using ultrasound, the parts are cleaned in a demineralized water and soap solution. They are dried using compressed air and placed in an oven to remove any traces of humidity. A special process is used to clean electronic components.

ENSURING TRANSDUCER ACCURACY

To verify and secure reliable measurements, transducer quality, and durability in operation, Brüel & Kjær transducers are subject to testing in extremely harsh environments. On average, we conduct between five and ten separate test procedures together with individual calibration and validation, before shipping.

Our unique status as the primary Danish standards lab reduces our traceability steps as well the uncertainty in our calibrations.

Microphone Calibration / Preamplifier Calibration An individual calibration is performed on each transducer before shipping. Calibration is done in our own calibration laboratory using a calibration technique based on FFT analysis,  providing the resolution needed to detect certain types of problems.

TRANSDUCER SENSITIVTY

Many external inputs signals vary and thus affect the transducer output signal giving unreliable measurement data. In order to secure accuracy, it is extremely important to know how the sensitivity of a specific transducer is affected when exposed to external parameters.

The sensitivity to unwanted external sources can only be accurately determined using advanced testing techniques. At Brüel & Kjær we take it a step further. We developed the testing equipment for measuring and determining the transducer sensitivity, using advanced control systems and cutting-edge technology.

The information we gather when testing, is always available via our product datasheets, detailing the individual transducer’s sensitivity to external inputs together with all other type specifications.

INNOVATION IS IN OUR DNA

At Brüel & Kjær, we don’t just design, manufacture, and develop transducers. We are in the business of innovation and always have been. Many of our employees are world-renowned experts, frequently speaking at conferences, presenting papers at seminars, and advising on new standards.

Brüel & Kjær has invented many of the technologies used in today's accelerometers and microphones, and it is our firm conviction that technology has no limits! If we can imagine it, we can develop it.

Sometimes a measurement situation requires a solution that cannot be met by existing Brüel & Kjær transducers. To effectively satisfy the needs of our clients, we have a procedure for efficiently handling requests for specialized and customized products. Minor modifications are handled with ease and at low cost, whereas major or new items requiring substantial engineering will need technical and economic assessment.
